white wlw who try to form their Masc™ identities by mimicking their poorly observed constructions of Black masculinity are and always will be cornball loser ass trash. y’all aren’t subverting femininity when you are taking your identities as White women to caricaturize Black men. that’s par for course for you. at best you’re just Queering™ your racism. stop it.

Hey if you wouldn’t mind could you give some examples?

  • using the physical mannerisms stereotypically associated with Black men, again generally when posturing to seem more aggressive or “masculine”
    • more specific: doing that shoulder-lean, clasped hands, “hey ma how you doing” type stuff when approaching women
  • using AAVE at all in any context
  • trying to proximate yourself with Blackness by referencing things associate with Black culture, exaggerating interests in things associated with Black culture, aligning yourself with Black men (the same way White gays do with Black women, essentially)

I also think that a lot of Lesbian Style™ associated with the “attractive White stud/butch/top” aesthetic is essentially the “urbanized” streetwear we associate with Black men. wlw do subvert masculinity in different ways, including wearing “menswear” in a way that is aimed at the consumption of other women, but it does become noticeable when you see White people who (1) don’t interact with Black people or (2) only interact with Blackness when it benefits them consistently grabbing from Black culture.

They also have a habit of retreating back into White feminine fragility when they are criticized or confronted about their behavior, especially when it’s resulting specifically from them puffing their chests out in the above fashion, which is especially laughable considering they want to be viewed as Womanly Aggressive™.

I was telling @brownbitchbisexual after I made this post that it’s particularly bothersome because a lot of these women will be the most vocal about the male gaze and how Uncivilized men of color in specific are when it comes to approaching women and dealing with relationships—yet they use the same mannerisms and speaking patterns, down to catcalling even, to perform masculinity themselves.

If you’re interested in seeing a live example, Robyn Almodovar from Hell’s Kitchen was the person who prompted this post in specific. You can look at her clips with Reggie Miller to see the bit that really ticked me off, although I’ve complained about her antics throughout this season.

I think y’all are ignoring the middle step which is probably black butches/studs. Since FOREVER we have been defining butchness and the trends around it and white women copy US at least as often, if not more often than they copy black men directly.

I was made aware after this post that the entire concept of being a stud applies to / originates from Black lesbians and that White lesbians calling themselves that in and of itself is a problem, so there’s that.

I don’t doubt that White women copy Black women in any community bc that’s what they’re Known For™ but I used the language I did primarily because I wasn’t limiting this obvservation to lesbians, as bi+ women (ie. all wlw) can and do perpetuate this behavior.

Outside of the lesbian community I don’t think there’s a rigid structure for how we subvert and perform femininity/masculinity (and there’s a lot of disagreements about whether or not non-lesbian wlw can use certain language to describe our subversion/performance of femininity or masculinity), and to me it seems like White women more actively think “this is the Epitome of Masculinity™” in some fashion looking at Black men as opposed to “Black butch, but White.”
