I want to take time to express a moment of humbled appreciation and profound gratitude for the countless black revolutionaries who worked to abolish explicit slavery in the United States and free themselves and each other. The incredible bravery and sacrifice of every single one– the teachers, the guides, the rebels, the protectors, the activists, the mothers– echoes through the generations. I will spend my life trying to appreciate the weight of this struggle.
The United States is still enslaving black people through mass incarceration, and contemporary abolitionists are still actively in this fight. For other non-black folks in solidarity with this struggle, please take some time with me on Juneteenth to reflect on this history and commit to the ways in which you can aid the fight against slavery and work to end policing, incarceration, and white supremacy.
Revolution is not an event, but a continuous process.
