So I was talking to a friend about how I feel like, when it comes to cis women performing drag, I have a different response to it being a woman of color versus a white woman. I talked about how, historically, women of color have had their femininity stripped and/or invalidated because it’s not expressed in a way that aligns with white colonialist/supremacist values, and so performing drag is a way of reclaiming their femininity in a way that, to some, might seem over-the-top – which is often something that women of color are automatically seen as being, anyway.

Anyway anyway, they agreed, and added that drag exists as a safe space for people who want to express the types of femininity that aren’t supported by mainstream, elitist, conservative ideal, in a space separate from oppression. And I was like, “yes! exactly that! Expression despite oppression!”
And then we both realized that was a really great motto, and now I would like to share it with all of you.

Expression despite oppression!
