I can definitely reccommend Dread Nation: it’s a book set right after the civil war, in which the zombie apocalypse interrupted the fighting. It follows the black, woman protagonist who is in a school training her to fight against the zombies (and it’s a thing where pretty much every black person is expected to do that and protect the white people, which is commented on a lot). She’s the daughter of a plantation owner’s wife who tried to drown her to keep the secret of her affair. And it’s written by a black woman!
